Meet our Interior Stylist Ange

by | Nov 17, 2020

The Untrained Eye is the studio of Ange Dye – collector, curator, stylist, collaborator. Ange works with architects, spatial designers and homeowners to select and source all the objects that bring an interior to life. Ceramics and glassware. Objects and soft furnishings. Plants and vessels. Art and furniture. All the ‘smalls’ – and not-so-small elements – that allow a space to function and feel as it should.

Through careful selection and curation, Ange helps new spaces come to life. She will realise a room’s personality by layering textures and tones to create refined and approachable interiors. Working collaboratively with owners and designers, she will propose object selections that support the overall design concept, and which offer the best form, beauty and function.

Ange Dye

Ange has spent the last 20 years in the interior design industry – curating, buying, styling and displaying design objects. Her fine arts photography and floristry training give her a refined understanding of texture and form, light and shade, harmony and contrast. With a photographer’s attention to detail and a florist’s delicacy, she maintains a deep interest and knowledge in contemporary and historic design movements to inform and inspire her work.

In 2000, Ange opened Macy Home, a Ponsonby design store known for interior objects that celebrate tone, texture and form. After curating, sourcing and styling the store for 17 years, she has developed an excellent network of makers, suppliers and brands. In 2017 Ange opened The Untrained Eye, a chance to extend her private residential design consultancy into larger retail and hospitality projects, collaborating with architects and interior designers to realise a complete design vision.

Testimonials

“I asked Ange to help me source a sofa for my office as well as turn all my objects and mess into something beautiful. It was all done really fast and efficiently and I am really happy with my creative space.”

Claire Hammon / Director Meadowlark Jewellers

“We have engaged Ange to assist with the interior styling of several projects over the last few years. Ange understood our objectives from the very beginning and truly enhanced what the designers at Paul Izzard Design had created for our new café Longshot in 2016 and Longroom’s Bar renovation in 2017. Ange has an amazing eye and a true sense of design, Ange is a great collaborator, is fantastic to work with and we are very lucky to have her as our design partner. We would happily recommend Ange to anyone requiring design services.”

Richard Bagnall / Director Longroom

“We found Ange at The Untrained Eye an amazing styling partner. Ange quickly understood what we needed to execute the new interior styling vision for the Robert Harris brand. She carefully curated and styled the new refurbished Robert Harris cafes in Timaru, Northlands and The Palms – following the styling references provided and fully understanding the new design aesthetic for the brand. Ange has a great eye for design and detail, she cares about each job, she’s a great communicator, a very hard worker and an absolute pleasure to work along side. We were grateful to partner with her on Robert Harris and look forward to doing so again on future interior styling jobs.”
